Paul Humphreys was born and raised in San Antonio,Texas and developed a passion for music at an early age.Riding around with his Grandad in this old pickup truck equipped with a bailing wire antenna ,Paul enjoyed twisting the knobs of the truck's AM radio and finding the music of singers like Hank Williams,Bob Wills and Earnest Tubb.Listening to his grandad sing songs of The Lightcrust Doughboys and other groups of a previous era deepened Pauls appreciation for music. Other influences soon began to pull on him.He remembers cruising in his fathers '69 Firebird convertible listening to Johnny Cash(RIP),Glen Campbell,Patsy Cline, and Neil Diamond. Crossover artist like Michael Martin Murphy and John Denver also appealed to Paul at an early age as he began to appreciate the range of the musical spectrum. He had been given a Drum Set at age five and the music of these and other artists inspired him to learn how to play drums, which led to his developement as a guitar player and singer. At age eleven , Paul's parents seperated and he and his sisters were sent to live with relatives. Paul wound up on a bus headed for his cousins dairy farm in Iowa.He quickly adapted to Country living and learned to love the solitude of rural life which gave him time to develop as a musician. He worked hard on the farm and best of all found that he could listen to AM radio all day long while driving a John Deere tractor. Pauls cousins Nan & Tad were both avid guitar players and had a collection of albums. When Paul wasn't driving a tractor, running a combine ,bailing hay ,or detassling corn,he would sit and play guitar along with those albums .One in particular by Neil Young became a favorite. Pauls cousin Tad also turned him on to the music of artists like James Taylor, Crosby,Stills Nash and Young ,and John Prine. As his confidence grew ,Paul began to sneak into open mic sessions in clubs and bars eventually became a lead singer in a band called Split Second. The group played talent shows and dances almost every weekend . Fifty dollars per musician, when they could get it ,was big salary for a group like that in those days.Paul paid his dues over the years playing for a succession of bands and eventually established his name as an individual performer .Today, he writes most of his own music and his new album "AS BIG AS TEXAS" is gaining airplay all across the state of Texas. The old adage in the music buisness is ,"You gotta hang out." Paul has been hanging out, establishing contacts in the music industry, making some good friends ,gaining some new fans and continuing to grow as a musician.Ha has logged thousands of miles playing shows, performing at open mic sessions, meeting disc jockeys at as many radio stations as he can. There are many chapters yet to be written in the story of Paul Humphreys and a number of fans waiting for the next installment is growing .
