Working with such local notables as Angela Strehli, Rotel & the Hot Tomatoes, Jimmy Carl Black, Toby Anderson, Pam Hart, The Atlantics, and King Soul (to name a few), Paul extended his style through a variety of Texas music. As saxophonist for the Marcia Ball Band, he toured the country steadily for over six years (1990-1997), appearing on national radio and television programs including A&E, The Texas Connection, and Prairie Home Companion. He now performs regularly with the Golden Arm Trio and the Seth Walker Band.
In 1988, while pursuing a masters degree in ethnomusicology at the University of Texas, Paul formed his own group (PKSAX) to showcase his original compositions. His long-awaited debut CD, Texas Tenure, presents many of these compositions, which incorporate jazz, R&B, funk, and Afro-Caribbean elements.
Paul blends his own compositions with favorites from a number of genres to provide entertaining and diverse performances. He is comfortable performing in a variety of musical settings, from the intimacy of a sax/guitar duo to the high energy of larger ensembles. In addition to performing, Paul teaches sax and clarinet at the Austin School of Music; he also teaches a UT Informal class in jazz history.
Paul is available to teach private lessons.
A writer of both fiction and nonfiction, Paul contributes feature articles to the Austin Chronicle and a column on jazz (Notes from the Woodshed) to the Austin Downtown Arts Magazine.
