Originally from Santa Rosa, California, Susanna honed her craft playing clubs and honky tonks all up and down her home state before making Austin her home in 1995. Susanna also appeared on underground indie compilations Pushing the Norton and Edge of Country, winning a steady fan base with her gorgeous vocals and no-nonsense original songs. Never one to apologize for her honky-tonk sensibilities, her first record, The Heart I Wear, was steeped in C&W tradition, and featured many of Austin's greatest country pickers, and was co-produced by none other than Bruce Robison. The Austin American-Statesman said of Susanna "…a crafty writer and clear-voiced songstress, whose songs transcend time and place…" -- Michael Corcoran The Journal of Country Music said "Susanna Van Tassel has one of the sweetest, saddest, happiest, honky tonk voices I think I've ever heard…Van Tassel is an entirely original talent, a yet uncrowned country queen every bit as regal as Kitty, Tammy or Loretta." -- Nolan Porterfield In 2002, Susanna was invited to appear on the highly regarded Happy Birthday Buck! alongside such greats as David Ball, Rodney Crowell, Jim Lauderdale, and the Derailers, among many others. On September 18, 2002, Susanna released her second CD, My Little Star, produced by Jim Stringer (Roger Wallace, Karen Poston, Ted Roddy). My Little Star features an A-list team of musicians, including Jim Stringer, Brad Fordham, Lisa Pankratz, Marty Muse, Cindy Cashdollar, Casper Rawls, Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis and Amy Farris performing Susanna's original tunes and a solitary cover - a Mel Tillis classic. The reviews are coming in fast. The Austin Chronicle says about Susanna: "…human voices crack, croak, sputter and fail, but hers doesn't. It's as pure as a stream…Van Tassel's honey-coated soprano is as good a reason as any for the phrase "honky-tonk angel" to exist. Better yet, this second album shows the local honky-tonker becoming as strong a songwriter as she is a singer." -- Christopher Gray Country Standard Time says: "The Austin country music scene is far better known for its male than female performers, but Susanna Van Tassel bucks the trend with her second LP. Featuring Van Tassel's evocative songwriting on 11 of the 12 songs and her charming vocals…this record should earn her a featured place in the South Texas boys club…this is a winning showcase for Susanna Van Tassel." -- Bill Silvers And premiere deejays agree. Mathias Andrieu, Paris, France says: This album is outstanding from beginning to end and perfectly fits the format of my show. I will give it significant air play…I can't wait to share this great music and my enthusiasm with my listeners." Susanna has made a steady rise to honky tonk diva status in Texas and with good reason. She is respected by her peers and has shared many a stage with the likes of other Texas greats: Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, The Derailers, Marti Brom and Monte Warden to name a few. My Little Star features songs close to Susanna's heart, and after one listen, they just might sneak into your as well.

Susanna Van Tassel's "The Heart That I Wear" is a wonderful CD from a great talent. She has a very pure, beautiful voice that takes you back in time to the era of Patsy Cline.
