Cary Swinney was born on September 10, 1960 in the small West Texas town of O'Donnell where killing snakes, throwing dirt clods, and pouring gasoline down ant holes were common forms of entertainment. At age 11, Swinney picked up his Dad's nylon string guitar and started learning some chords. About that same time, Swinney's older brother brought home an album by John Prine. (Swinney considers Prine to be his greatest influence). Swinney wrote several songs that year. In 1989, Swinney was invited to an old stucco farm house located 10 miles north of Lubbock. The house, as it turns out, was a haven for Lubbock's subculture. There, Swinney met a Lubbock-based (and now Austin-based) fiddle player named Richard Bowden (currently with the Austin Lounge Lizards). After hearing some of Swinney's material, Bowden encouraged him to "come out of hiding". In 1996, Swinney walked into Lubbock's Brazos Studios. There he met Alan Crossland, engineer and owner of the studio. The two agreed that it would be best if Swinney performed the songs LIVE. The tape was cued up, and the songs were sung. Forty original songs were recorded. Of the forty, Crossland chose the thirteen that ended up on Human Masquerade. Featured musicians include: Lloyd Maines on pedal steel, lap steel, dobro, and acoustic slide guitar and Richard Bowden on fiddle, viola, and mandolin. Swinney is currently working on his second album.

Cary's music is both fun and serious. But if his music gets under your skin, then move along and keep listening to whatever puts you to sleep. Swinney is slowly smoking out the trendy watered-down songwriters that are ever so popular today.

1-1 = 0 For someone with the gift of lyrics, he uses them poorly to trash something he is not willing to try himself. This is the perfect aethiest country album. Talks of hypocrits and such, not far from Ray Wylie Hubbard. Easy to knock someone elses beliefs.... Try your own if you have any depth besides the next rhyme.

Cary's first recording, Human Masquerade got my attention , it was just plain killer goods in every way. AND if you heard Human Masquerade you'd know this singer writer is unforgettable, no doubt. Cary's work is riveting, biting lyrics that never hold back and sentiments many hold but can never say. To me , he's Blaze Foley's brother in spirit, they speak the same language,; the undisguised truth. Which for some of us there just is not enough of. If you've never heard him , you really oughta change that and check this guy out. I am a fan through & through.

Just picked up a copy (actually 4 copies) of Big Shots...fan-freaking-tastic!!! No other songwriter (with the possible exception of Steve Earl) speaks more truth with brutal honesty...Cary is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant pop culture world...Keep up the great work!!!

I have heard Birdwatcher, live, and will say that this CD will be a huge hit both in America and Japan. GO CS, give 'em hell.
