JAMES HAND Tokyo, Texas; 1953 - "Folks, like I said before and it's STILL true, James Hand is the real deal!" - Willie Nelson Though he's been making powerful original music for nearly four decades, James Hand has unjustly remained one of American music's secret treasures - a local legend, modestly plying his craft in countless smoky dives and dancehalls to a slowly widening circle of admirers. What he does, he does straight from his heart, taking the hard-won lessons that life and love have taught him and pouring them into his songwriting and performing. "I don't sing like anybody," he admits with a shy, sly smile, "and I don't look like Kenny Chesney." He's right: he sings like nobody but himself, his phrasing drawing out the pain and humor of his lyrics with an unpredictable yet soulful series of tiny inflections. His songs are equally mysterious and unclassifiable. While they are noticeably rich with the influences of his heroes - classic country architects like Hank, Lefty, and Ernest - Hand's songs are uniquely his, imbued with equal parts gallows humor and the ability to stare unflinchingly into life's darkest corners. When he's not onstage, Hand has carved out a niche for himself as a horse trainer. "When it comes to horses," he says, "people act like it's some big deal - like this whole horse whispering thing. But I'll tell you something: you can whisper to 'em, you can get down on your knees and act like 'em, but the horse knows you ain't a horse." That offhand remark says a lot about James Hand - he knows who he is, and onstage and off he's the same man: soft-spoken, achingly polite, and genuine.

We caught James Hand's performance at Riley's Tavern in Hunter,TX, just outside of New Braunfels. Willie was right, he is the real deal when it comes to the honky tonk music scene. We had the opportunity to meet him shake his hand and say hello; a really down to earth guy. His latest CD is a must for your collection. He writes most of the songs he sings; he's a natural. If you like honky tonk this guy is the best out there today, bar none.

James Hand is a true Texas treasure. The songs he writes and performs are true life experiences. There are not many artists today that can sing with the passion and pain James has experienced. Buy this CD and you'll understand. God bless James Hand...

Once again, what we have here is a perfect example of true country music at it's honky-tonk grittiest best. Never one to disappoint, James Hand's third album is a treasure of pure country music, rockabilly, and heartfelt ballads of a broken man. His sincere and down to earth talent is truely at home in a smoke filled Texas honky-tonk and was rightfully recorded at the Saxon Pub for this installment. The only regret you'll have when you listen to this album is that you are not there live as he is singing as only James Hand can sing. James Hand is a true artist and gentleman. For the first time, for public release, James Hand's band backs him up. Pete Micthell's lighting lead guitar, B.B. Morse's thumping upright bass, Woz's clickity-clacking drum, and Herb Stiener's swaying steel guitar all come together with James Hand's voice and create a sound that seems God given and blessed. I highly recommend this CD to any true country and hinky-tonk fan. You will not be disappointed. www.jamesslimhand.com

I first saw James Hand in his hometown of Tokio when I was 18. I'd never heard anything like it before and still haven't. If you close your eyes, you'd think it WAS Hank Williams, Sr. His songs come from a place where not many people can reach, and definitely a place that those pseudo-country, Nash-vegas pop artists can reach. This is what country music was once all about and still is for some people.

This man is from a different era where music was from the heart and getting paid for singing was considered a nice bonus. I personally know James "Slim" Hand, having played rhythm guitar for him, and I thouroughly consider him the best modern day true country singer I have heard. He sends chills down my back when he fades a word he is singing into a somber moan. His Hank Williams type stage presence certainly captivates an audience. On a personal level, Hand is a true and trusted friend, whom I highly respect and admire. The hard life he as led certainly echos in his music and through thick and thin he as managed to walk away from each challenge more of man. I highly recommend any James Hand album to anyone who loves GOOD country music sung from the heart.

I was introduced to James Hand from a friend of mine from Hillsboro,TX. I really didn't dig James at first, but it began to grow on me. I went to visit that friend about a year ago in San Marcos. We went and saw James Hand at the Broken Spoke in Austin. It was definantly a night to remember, too much Pearl Light and not enough Slim!!!!
