This past year has been a testament to the long-held assertion that Susan Gibson is a road warrior in the truest sense in addition to being a dedicated singer, songwriter, and performing musician. The CMA award-winning songwriter (the Dixie Chicks took the Gibson-penned “Wide Open Spaces” to the top for four weeks) has been hitting the road consistently over the past 14 years, touring nationally in support of her own brand of Texas-Americana-folk music.

However, 2010 started off as the year where the road unexpectedly hit her back, and in February she suffered a severely broken arm, dislocated elbow, and shattered wrist in a car accident. Doctors estimated she wouldn’t be playing guitar until early fall, and her record release plans were put on hold indefinitely. Road warriors don’t sit around for too long when their livelihood involves playing music and traveling, however, and Gibson was playing full shows a mere two-and-a-half months after the accident with the help of some physical therapy, fan support, and a lot of determination. The latter half of 2010 made up for lost time with two tours to the northern Rocky Mountain region, a Southeast tour, and her well-worn paths across Texas.

Gibson’s 2011 release, Tightrope, is both right at home with and a departure from her previous albums. While the album was recorded before her accident, the mood and tone are fitting of a year spent in reflection. Gibson and producer Gabe Rhodes are the sole musicians on Tightrope, which manages to be beautiful in its sparseness, easily accessible yet full of sophisticated notes for those who take a careful listen. A pencil eraser on a cigar box for percussion, a plucked grand piano string, or a dobro with a neck so warped it isn’t a dobro anymore; these elements create an intimate album that only two creative minds sitting in a studio together for days at a time can create.

The songs themselves are tried and true Susan Gibson, whose craftsmanship in songwriting has made her one of the most respected artists in the Texas scene and beyond. Tightrope features co-writers that run the gamut from established songwriters like Michael Hearne, Monica Smart (“Evergreen” and “Never Enough”), and Jana Pochop (“Lovely When You Cry”) to first time writers but longtime friends Amy Patton, Michelle Moss, and Marian Brackney (“Hope Diamond”), proving that Gibson draws inspiration from many creative stimuli. From a powerful narrative about a guitar and the lives it touched (“The Wood Wouldn’t Burn”) to the assertive and fiercely independent title track, Gibson continues to affirm her place on the list of troubadour songwriters who have an innate need to affect the lives of their fellow humans through song.

While the road literally stopped Gibson in her tire tracks last year, it also gave the motivation to heal and is now the means to bring Tightrope to an audience. Gibson plans to debut it in Texas and beyond with a series of Spring album release dates as well as with an official showcase at the 2011 Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis.

Susan Gibson is a great benchmark for any songwriter to aspire to. The songs sound as if they fell out of the sky and through the lens of her personal experience, but they never hit the ground - they just keep flying. Way to go, Susan.

Susan Gibsonwill always be the Best Female Vocalist /Songwriter /Heartbreaker.... Raw Emotion, Talent, and Craft combined within a damn nice person. Her ability to find and communicate emotional moments any human being with a heart and/or a sense of humor can identify with is uncanny. To top it all off, her voice is simply put... Perfect.

"Shark Sandwich?" More like "Stellar Sandwich". Too bad the rating scale only goes to five -- it needs to go to eleven, which is where this CD ranks. I kept thinking, "OK, there's got to be one song that is somewhat inferior to the others," but I am happy to report I never found it. Every song on this CD is as good as the last, and causes you to anticipate listening to the next one. I had only one complaint with the CD, and it's this: it contains a "last song", which indicates that the CD has come to an end. And that's too bad, because you just want to listen all day. It's amazing. The first thing I did after listening to Chin Up was email a bunch of people with Susan's website address (susansongs.com), encouraging them to give her music a listen and daring them to not find it instantly enjoyable and addictive. I also purchased another copy to send to a friend who I kept wishing could have been in the audience with me last night because she would have just loved the show. And not only is the music so fine, but I got to meet Susan, Michael and Eleanor last night (10/11/02 at Danny's in Overland Park, KS), and they are so nice and down-to-earth -- they shared their table with me, my friend Amy and our bud Kristie Stremel (who was due to open for Susan that night); and it was only well into the conversation that I realized they were the band that night. If you three are reading this now: Your show rocked the house and my world. I'm glad you all met each other, because you're amazing musicians who make the world that much sweeter by way of your music. Thanks. See you next time you come to KC. - Kathy Henn ([email protected])

Susan Gibson's new album, Chin Up, is an album that shows the lighter side of heartache. Most songwriters either can't write about sadness without being depressing or can't write about happiness without being corny. Susan is a songwriter who transcends these tendencies. Susan's clever wordplay is both entertaining and her lyrics insightful. When I listen to this record, I get the sense that Susan has discovered something amazing about joy and sorrow: that they are not completely opposite, and they can exist simultaneously. The songs on this record have a way of looking at the pain and heartache of life and finding joy and humor. I dare anyone to listen to this album without cracking a smile. For fans of cliche-free acoustic folk and country.

"Chin Up" is Susan's fist attempt at a CD since the break up of the Groobees. Unfortunately, this is also her worst work to date. Susan's very powerful, emotional and passionate voice is no where to be found. If however, you like very reflective, folk like music, this is the CD for you. I on the other hand prefer her bolder works.

Next to maybe Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zant, best song writer I know, and I say that using "Wide Open Spaces" as a throw out.
