Wow! Wow! OMG Wow! I’m still speechless after last Saturday and all of the happenings on the downtown square with the Notorious Songwriter Showcase on Simonton and the matinee and late show at the historic Crighton Theatre featuring Tony Arata, Mark Germino and Vince Gill.

Eat your heart out Nashville, Austin, New Orleans, Chicago, L.A. and San Francisco. This musical extravaganza was only in Conroe, only on the downtown square! For one day last Saturday we arguably held the title of live music center of the universe! Well starting with the fine lineup of “picker poets” sponsored at noon by Vernon Wayne and Margaret’s City Café kicked off the first Notorious Songwriter Showcase with local singer/songwriters Mike Allen and Steve Sullivan followed by David Scheffield.

At 3 p.m. one my favorite groups Slim Bawb and Gator Bait took the stage. Man, what a show they put on! Despite the heat they often wore these rubber Mexican wrestling masks and Slim Bawb leaped off stage mask and all, walking through Simonton playing his mandolin behind his back to the rhythm of their special brand of swamp-grass. Think Tommy Joe White meets Doug Kershaw meets Lightning Hopkins meets a bluegrass version of Little Feat. Once again they blew me away. I mean it’s hard to imagine a duo can create so much sound. I guess if Jack White can do it with his White Stripes Band then Bawb can do it. What talented guys! Check them out.

Well next was Mike Stinson and his band followed by his former So Cal soulmate Randy Weeks and his band. Both of them put on great shows and proved that all the attention these two honky-tonkers from the left coast now living in Houston (Mike) and Austin (Randy) get is well deserved. They are in our area occasionally so check them out at the Corner Pub, Vernon Wayne’s Thirsty Thursday and County Line BBQ.
