Emmylou Harris has found that the more she sings, the better she sings. Perhaps that's the secret to her strikingly beautiful voice.

Harris, whose career spans nearly 40 years, will be in concert for one show at the Weinberg Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19. Opening for Harris is The Low Anthem, an indie folk and Americana band based in Rhode Island.

I spoke with Harris by phone recently at her home in Nashville. But the Alabama native's roots run north to Maryland, too, where her family moved when she was 10 years old. Her Marine father was transferred to Quantico and the family settled in Clarksville. Harris' widowed mother now lives with her in Nashville.

Harris just finished a new album, due out in spring 2011, and will begin working on a collaborative album with Buddy Miller, Shawn Colvin and Patty Griffin. The foursome recently toured as "Three Girls and Their Buddy." They've played in each other's bands and on each other's albums, and covered each other's songs. For this album, Harris committed to write four songs.
