Call it dirt road if you like but I think working man's music better describes the man's lyrics that make me stop evertime dead in my tracks. Of all or any genre of music for that matter his lyrics are a spot on road map of this and I can only presume every other redblooded American country boy,that ain't exactly country. Or so they say.the best I've ever heard.
The first time you hear Michael O'Neal, it may take you by surprise: he's a friendly, stocky guy with no signs of "brilliant artist" in sight...but then again, what great artist dresses/looks the part anyhow? In his broken, yet tuneful voice coupled with a unique picking style he delivers songs about people that EVERYONE knows. His songs can be short, some are longer, but the point ALWAYS gets across. It is fascinating to watch him live, but his records are things of intense beauty. A lot of what he writes is sad, but it's all rooted in the truth and those who long for the halcyon days of childhood can especially relate to the vein he works in.

WHEN I FIRST HEARD THIS GUY SING AND LISTENED TO HIS LYRICS, I WAS STUNNED AT HOW AWSOMELY REAL HE IS. I HAVE BOTH OF HIS CD'S AND THEY ARE A MUST HAVE. THIS MAN CAN BRING YOU TO YOUR KNEES WITH THE SOUND OF HIS VOICE AND GUITAR LICKS....SO ROCK ON MICHAEL!!!!!!!
Vinny saw Michael O'Neal play this past Thursday while opening up for Chris Knight in Paris, Texas at Buffalo Joe's. First time listening to his stuff. It's not really Vinny's favorite style, but the dude's a good songwriter and storyteller. Kind of a perfect fit opening for Chris Knight, actually. Hometown crowd dug him pretty much.
Could not agree more with some of the posts below. Michael O;Neal is the real deal. In a world of people trying to be cool and hip, this guy just concentrates on putting out songs with feeling and emotion. Listen to Halfway House one time, and you'll know what I mean. Believe it.
Michael Oneal is a man's man. His music really reflects the working class of people. All of his songs hit close to home. He is a cultural icon in the construction industry (7-12's). Having been all over the country I've had people from Nebraska to S. Texas, California to Pennsylvania ask me about micheal oneal from paris texas. Rock on mob.
I have not seen Michael perform in about a year ,since his band broke up -but I must say I WILL soon,and ...you OWE it to yourself to hear Michael. He has the lyrical way of Chris Knight,with a passion that resonates in his voice.You KNOW the characters in his songs (if you are not one of them).
Hope he still wears the Guy Clark shirt we gifted him -simply because his music MOVED us !!

Every so often an artist comes along and just kicks you square in the pants with downright grit and honesty. Michael O'Neal is that kind of artist. He has a way of songwriting that pulls you in, and before you know it you are walking the streets with him and wiping the sweat from your brow.O,Neal paints the perfect picture of small town struggles and dealing with big time issues.
By far, one of the most under-rated CDs on the market. This guy is remarkable, and every song is amazing. The truth in his lyrics , and the magic of his story telling is completely mesmerizing (check out "No Surprise" or "The Vet"). Do yourself a huge favor and listen to his music, and go see him live. If their is any justice in this world, this guy will get some long overdue recognition.
