Gruene Hall
Venue Review
Simply the best place to experience Texas Red Dirt Music on planet earth bar none. Do yourself a favor and catch the legends there while you still can catch a Jerry Jeff Show or a Ray Wylie show, Gary P. etc. It brings out the fire in those guys! If you could just get shots there to go with the brews it would be perfect.

This place is an absolute hole! 150 year old building that literally sways in the breeze, no air conditioning, just huge screen windows all down the sides. Nothin' but beer and sangria wine, you gotta stand backstage to wait in line for the men's room. Oh, and I've seen Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen, Charlie Robison, Dale Watson, The Gourds, and Leon Russell there. Headed back this May and CAN'T WAIT!! "Where it's cool to be really old!"

First of all, I Love Live Music. Gruene Hall is not a very enjoyable experience. The bathrooms are awful, and the place is super hot. There is no place to sit, and they only serve beer and wine. The sound is not very good either. Sounds like too much base when your near the stage. They do have some good acts come through though.

the epitome of a dance hall... during the day youve got picnic tables inside and out to enjoy lunch(that u bring). the concerts are a bit crowded-feeling but this is one of the most historic buildings in music... come on .... this place still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when i realize where i am.

I hate this place. It is hot and you can't see the stage if the room gets full. Just not that much fun. They get great bands but people just can't see because of that low stage.

I have only been to Gruene Hall once and it was to see a New Orleans legend not a Texas one, Dr. John. I will most definatly catch another show there though. The town itself just has that small town Texas feel and even though there will be plenty of police at the door to intimidate you just show em your ID and get on with the drinkin'. You can tell the place is old. I mean the wood floor has holes in it and if the crowd that gathers around the stage starts to get down in anyway the floor will start to move. It is not that big and tables will be gobbled up fast so expect to stand is right. Decent drink pricing and just the fact that you get to say you went to Gruene Hall is cool as hell. If they end the show well before midnight like they did Dr. John you might want to stop by the Tavern in the Gruene on the way out. We stopped by this place on the way back to Austin and found a packed house with good lookin' women everywhere and a damn good band, Monty Guitar Tyler Band, playin' Stevie Ray and Allman Brothers covers to the note as well as originals.

Wear comfortable shoes. That is because, for a lot of the shows, you are going to be standing. For a few shows, Jerry Jeff Walker for one, they put in chairs and you can sit and enjoy the music but for others you are going to be standing. The restrooms are horrible. It is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. It is hard to hear the music if you sit at the tables provided at the back of the dancehall. All in all a horrible place for a concert, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
