" F@#! YEAH...on my iPod now between Boz Scaggs and Bruce Springsteen....impressive!" - Jody Parker, Houston Chronicle
Texas-born Americana Rock musician Brian Coy didn’t start out playing music. He spent four years in the Marine Corps before he picked up a guitar, taught himself how to play and realized he could write songs. Not just run of the mill songs, but he could tell his life story through music. Following his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, Coy took a job at Big Texas in Spring and met fellow Marine and Texas musician Ryan James who took him under his wing. Just a few short years later, Coy found himself in Yellow Dog Studios, owned by Dave Perceful, in Austin, Texas recording with two of the top producers in the state – Adam Odor, producer for Cody Canada and The Departed and Midnight River Choir; and Britt Lloyd of The Britt Lloyd Band. Coy’s debut album, Pieces, was recorded at Yellow Dog over five months – with one or two days spent recording a month thus giving the album the designated title. “It was a great environment to record in. It was time spent with family,” said Coy. Songs appearing on Coy’s Pieces are soulful, full of southern rock melodies reminiscent of his influences: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Earl Keen, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. Admittedly he wasn’t raised on country music even though at times he sounds like he could be related to Pat Green. “I just wanted to write powerful songs.” Following the completion of Pieces, Coy formed Brian Coy & The Remaining Few with lifelong friend Jacob Millwee (bass) and Houston musician Ben Keenen (drummer). The band is booking gigs all around Texas, sharing their music and looking forward to the sweet-spot moment when they are offered to headline at Billy Bobs Texas. |
