In 1998, Los Super Seven were formed and made one of the most critically acclaimed albums of that year, winning a GRAMMY award for Best Mexican/American Musical Performance. Los Super Seven, originally a one-off project, has now grown into a truly global phenomenon. Four of the original Seven are back--David Hidalgo and César Rosas of Los Lobos, Rubén Ramos and Rick Treviño (both well-established singers in their own right).
This time out, however, the breadth of the project is much greater--encompassing musics from many other Latin American countries including Cuba, Puerto Rico, Peru and Brazil. International superstars of the highest order like Caetano Veloso, Raúl Malo and Susana Baca were delighted to participate--each adding his/her own unique style and sensibility.
For the better part of a year, the major participants in this project, along with the brilliant arranger Alberto Salas, poured over hundreds of traditional songs and carefully selected material that they felt would be appropriate. After choosing the songs (and writing several new ones), the players met and jammed at length in the studio, until their various traditional roots and influences dissolved and an entirely fresh, musical language emerged.
Listen to the 12 songs on Canto and you will hear echoes of the vast Latin music experience--weaving their way around the world--separating and defining themselves via the traditions of each region--and uniting as one new, cohesive musical statement through the brilliance of these masterful musicians.
