Calvin Johnson, known as “Pug” to all his friends and family, decided at
the age of 12 to start playing guitar. His parents bought him a cheap
guitar, thinking it was a phase that he would outgrow, telling him they
would buy him a better one if he actually learned to play. Pug spent hour
after hour teaching himself to play. With a strong history of poetry
writing that began when he was 9, it was natural to turn the poetry into
song, original songs about life, love, and everything in between. Soon, he
had joined up with fellow student Jeremy Porter who was wearing out yet
another drum set. Joining forces, they became Slow Rollin’ Lows. The band
pays homage to the legends of Texas Music and their own outlaw roots both
in their style of performing and the music they play. A song, written by
Billy Joe Shaver and performed by Waylon Jennings, gave the band their name
as well as the song that is on every set list. Never failing to recognize
those that cleared the path, SRL continues blazing a trail with new songs
and sounds anchored in true, honest outlaw country heritage.

Attending Lamar State College in Port Arthur, and obtaining a degree in
Audio Engineering has opened up a whole new aspect of music for him. Making
friends with musicians and performers from different genres has broadened
his scope of music, and it is reflected in this new solo album. With Pug’s
strong faith and family ties, it just seemed right for him to start work on
a “concept” album. An album that defines where he came from, and who he is.
“Radix” which is the Latin word for “roots” clearly shows the people who
are important to him and helped make him the man he is today. God and
family are key factors in his life and he’s not afraid to tell it with some
help from his new friends. Radix not only tells stories but features
awesome music with mandolin, banjo, fiddle and bass, including an upright
bass, as well as keyboards. Whether you see this young man performing solo
or as part of Slow Rollin’ Lows, you are bound to enjoy the show, hear some
beautiful lyrics, tap your foot, dance a little, and basically have a great
time!
