Marcia Ball will set the Bosque River Stage ablaze with her unique blend of sultry rhythm and blues at a free concert sponsored by McLennan Community College on Oct. 1. Gates open at 7 p.m., and the concert starts at 8 p.m.

This Texas-born and Louisiana-raised singer is set to bring the blues to Waco. Ball blends the best of her southern roots into her original sound — soulful, swampy R&B and rollicking southern blues. She is known for her passionate vocals, heartfelt lyrics, rousing tunes and inspiring piano playing.

Taught by her grandmother and aunt before taking formal lessons, Ball began playing the piano at just 5 years-old. She credits artists such as Etta James and Irma Thomas as the influences behind her music. Ball’s career spans more than three decades and includes four Grammy nominations, a 2006 nomination for the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year award and eight Blues Music Awards. Her most recent album, “Peace, Love & BBQ,” debuted at No. 1 in the Billboard Blues Charts, and she is the 2010 Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame inductee.

Teaming up with Ball as her opening act is Guy Forsyth, an Austin musician who blends folk, rock and country. Forsyth is an ace on the harmonica, as well as guitar, ukulele and singing saw, and is known for his energetic live performances. His band mates are Will Landic (bass and tuba) and Rob Hooper (drums and Cajon).

Concessions will be available for purchase at the Bosque River Stage (no outside food or drinks). Concert-goers can choose stadium-style seats or bring blankets and chairs for lawn seating.
