After the curtain fell on Red Dirt sensation Cross Canadian Ragweed, another window of opportunity opened for Texas country singer Seth James.

According to Cross Canadian Ragweed front man Cody Canada, the band born in Stillwater, Oklahoma played their last gig on Oct. 24 at Joe’s Sports Bar in Chicago.

Lately James has been doing gigs with Canada, writing songs and getting ready for a new band, which will include Canada, James, Cross Canadian Ragweed bassist Jeremy Plato and David Bowen.

James has also been helping Canada on his latest solo project.

Canada said his latest record, a solo album featuring songs written by several Oklahoma songwriters, was to be a Ragweed project, but after the band’s drummer, Randy Ragsdale, announced he would be coming off the road to spend more time with his family, the band decided to call it quits.

That’s when Canada decided to do the album on his own.

While James was hesitant about going into any details about Canada’s latest album or about the new band, he did have to admit his solo career is going to be taking a backseat for who knows how long.

“I’m probably gonna stop making records for a little while,” James said. “Cody and I are working together. He’s working on his solo project, so I’m also working with him on that.”

So what about the new group?

Currently little is known about them except that with this band, Canada said they won’t be performing at the country venues any longer. Canada wants to pull himself out of Ragweed’s shadow and to do so the group will be hitting the venues better suited to the band’s rock feel.

And what about a name?

“Seth and I decided to get this album done and let’s get the material written and once we get in the studio, then we’ll start kickin’ it around,” Canada said.

“Obviously we want it to be something cool, but for now, we’re just going to concentrate on the material before we dedicate ourselves to a name.”
