For Old Crow and Keen, it's all about the tour

For Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen and old-time string band Old Crow Medicine Show, the road is a way of life. It's the only way they can get their music to the fans, since they receive almost no radio play.

Those tens of thousands of miles logged each year in cramped tour buses pay dividends. Both Keen and OCMS have a small but fiercely loyal following. Both will perform in Norfolk next week. Keen comes to The NorVa on Tuesday; OCMS plays the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Wednesday.

Keen has been recording and performing for more than 25 years. In 1997, he flirted with mainstream success when his song "Feelin' Good Again" was a minor hit on adult contemporary stations. Lightning didn't strike twice, but Keen said that no longer troubles him.

"I've never written with the intention of getting on the radio," he said. "But I do want people to pay attention. I've got a great band, some of the best musicians out there, and we put on a good show. But for me, it always comes back to the writing."
