Writing is in James McMurtry's blood.

The son of a novelist/screenwriter father (Larry McMurtry, "Lonesome Dove" and "Terms of Endearment") and an English professor mother, McMurtry is known for his thought-provoking lyrics. That talent hasn't gone unnoticed by fans or critics.

His 2005 release, "Childish Things," spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio chart. In September 2006, "Childish Things" and the song "We Can't Make It Here" won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively.

Go! reporter Sandy Tomcho chatted with McMurtry via e-mail about his music and his live shows.

When you're writing, are you consciously paying attention to the process, or is it something that comes naturally to you?

Usually, a couple of lines and a melody come naturally. Then I have to build the rest of the song. That part can be tedious.
