SOUND ADVICE: Shelly King’s ‘Welcome Home’ spectacular

Texas singer-songwriter Shelley King won the State of Texas Official Musician Award in 2008 and it’s easy to see why with her release, “Welcome Home.”

But that doesn’t mean the record is loaded with Lone Star-state musicians and references.

Instead, John Magnie, Tim Cook and Steve Amedee, members of the renowned New Orleans band The Subdudes, are her collaborators here, with spectacular results.

 Take for example lead off track “Summer Wine.” Here, a lazy Louisiana sound, going against the wide-open flatland Texas vibe, is pure pleasure. The active accordions, heavenly harmonies, a swinging beat are just the start. From toe-tapper “Everything’s Alright,” the ‘50s feel of “It’s Starting To Rain” to the smoky “I Can’t Make It Easy,” King digs deep, and her emotive voice reaches far.
