Texas country band Whiskey Myers is returning home to play a St. Patrick’s Day show at Where’s Rufus here on Thursday.
The band that includes lead singer Cody Cannon, guitarists Cody Tate and John Jeffers, bassist Gary Brown, and drummer Jeff Hogg, grew up in East Texas and have spent the last two years touring the country.
The members of Whiskey Myers are known for their exuberant stage presence.
“We know people are going to compare us to bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and that’s fine,” Cannon said. “We take that as a high compliment. But when they hear this new record, they’re going to find out that there’s a whole lot more to this band.
“We love country music, we love rock, we love blues, and we just love to jam. It doesn’t matter where the music comes from. We’re constantly growing as a band, so I’m not even sure we’ve thought too much about what we are or where we’re going.”
The band is returning to its roots to promote its sophomore album, “Firewater,” which is scheduled to be released on April 26.
The album was produced by ex-Shooter Jennings guitarist and songwriter Leroy Powell, who wrote three of the 12 songs on the album.
Over the past two years, the band has toured extensively throughout Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas, perfecting their live shows and writing the follow up to their first album, “Road of Life.” It has sold more than 15,000 copies.
The independent release produced a Top 10 single on the Texas Music Chart with “Lonely East TX Nights,” and two Top 15 singles, “Road of Life” and “Summer 2005.”
After drawing a solid following in Nashville last year, Whiskey Myers signed with William Morris Endeavor. The group has since opened for Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, and Luke Bryan. It has also opened for Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reckless Kelly, Eli Young Band, and Randy Rogers Band.
