Punch Brothers Hard To Categorize And Like It That Way

The Punch Brothers will not be put in a box of someone else's making.

"To put bluegrass on it is to label it in a really small way," said Tom Garnsey, the promoter behind Vootie Productions that is bringing the Punch Brothers from New York to Bozeman on Monday.

Yes, they are a five-piece band in the bluegrass tradition, with a banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and double bass. But their music is certainly not bluegrass, and even goes beyond the progressive "newgrass" categorization.

For a foray into variety, listen to the Punch Brothers' cover of Radiohead's "Packt Like Sardines In a Crush'd Tin Box," an iTunes exclusive, then "Rye Whiskey" of their latest album, "Antifogmatic" released last year. Finally, the four-movement suite "The Blind Leaving the Blind" off the debut album, 2008's "Punch." Each is drastically different, yet are born of the same group of musicians listening to the soul and not the genre.
