None of the songs on "Step Right Up" is as good as "My Hometown," "Loving County" or "Indianola." But taken as a whole, this album is top-notch Texas fare. "Right Man For the Job" demands a quick right-ward twist of the volume knob, and it stays consistently as good from there. The rendition of "Desperate Times" is excellent, "John O'Reilly" showcases Robison's storytelling talent, and anytime you get to hear Natalie Maines, it's a good thing. The closer, "Life of the Party," is a great yuk (but cover the kids' ears.) This album has some mainstream appeal, but shouldn't disappoint the true-to-Texas crowd in the least.

Simply one of the greatest pieces of music made in 2001...Nashville,I'm afraid, has no idea how bad it needs Robison and more grooves like "Right Man for the Job.." Listening to this is akin to watching Nirvana on MTV in 1992 and knowing the hair-bands,sooner or later, would be heading for the tall grass...Something else is coming, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Charlie's Step Right Up CD is one of the best I've heard. He brings storytelling and real TX music back to people who've been missing it! Like those before him (Waylon, Willie, Johnny, Kris) Charlie knows how to tell a story and have a great time! Great CD!!
Until last week, I didn't even know that this album existed. I don't think that Charlie even sells it while on tour. I am glad I found it. Listening to it gives me an idea of how Charlies music has evolved. I really get a strong impression that this must have been Charlies first recording. I don't hear as much of his trademark style on this album as on the later ones, but it may be due to different band members. I especially love the one bluegrass song thrown into the mix (yep, you read that right, bluegrass). Very well done, with a number of great songs that Charlie doesn't even do in concert any more. I reccomend this album very strongly, but only if you already own the other ones.
Charlie Robison is the sexiest mother fucker I have ever layed my eyes on!! He is so talented. He can pick and belt out song like no one else I've ever heard. He writes beautiful lyrics. No one could do any better. (except his wife of course, ha!) All the albums are fabulous!!! You all should run to buy them.
Charlie, if you ever read this. I LOVE YOU!!

i have no love for a sellout. if you dump your fans and run to nashville you're a dickhead. charlie robison qualifies for that title. nothing wrong with fame -- but definitely something wrong with selling out. charlie is a jackass
I saw Charlie in Flatonia and he put on a the best show so far. I have seen him 6 times and this one was the best. We were in the front row. Can't wait to see him again !! Drink -- LONE STAR
Charlie is a badass. he came to san angelo with robert earl king. in my opinion, he took the show. he had everybody pumped up and didnt give a shit what people thought of him. I talked to him after the concert and he was the nicest guy i have met.
