Luckenbach consists of almost ten acres between South Grape Creek and Snail Creek. Its oldest building is the Post Office-General Store-Bar, opened in 1849 by Minna Engel, whose father was an itinerant preacher from Germany. The community, first named Grape Creek, was later named after Minna's husband, Carl Albert Luckenbach. Luckenbach was first established as a community trading post and was one of the few that never broke a peace treaty with the Comanche Indians whom they bartered and traded with. One year later a Community Hall was built which is now known as the world famous Luckenbach Dance Hall. A blacksmith shop and steam-operated cotton gin were constructed in 1879, and still stand today. For generations families came to Luckenbach for reunions, weddings, Schuetzen Fests (Shooting Contests), Saengerfests (German song fests), and the yearly school closing. The hard-working, fun-loving German farmers enjoyed trading goods and stories and celebrated with food and beer. Hondo Crouch, local rancher and regional folk hero bought Luckenbach in 1970 when he saw an ad in the paper "town- pop.3- for sale." Luckenbach became this poet - sage's stage where he held the first Women's Only Chili Cook-off, a World's Fair (because he proclaimed Luckenbach as the center of the Universe) & Return of the Mud Dauber Day (as do swallows in Capistrano). After Hondo died in 1976 his music making friends penned the song "Luckenbach Texas" which was recorded by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson in 1978. The song, now a classic, became a number one smash hit all across the nation and beyond putting Luckenbach on the map for good. Today, Luckenbach is still a social center. Many consider the Luckenbach Dance Hall the "Best Dancehall in Texas" and the Luckenbach bar has more soul per square inch than any other, anywhere.
