Lorna Willhelm is a blues/jazz singer based in Waco, Texas. Although a newcomer to the music scene she has developed a reputation as “the little gal from Texas with the great big voice.” Her influences include Ella Fitzgerald, Michelle Willson, Lou Ann Barton, Mel Torme, Willie Mae Thornton, and Sugar Ray Norcia. She began singing at an early age moving between country, folk and rock. A love of all music moved her to explore jazz and blues and this fusion was the catalyst for developing her voice. As a music student at McLennan Community College she has studied under Austin jazz diva Beth Ullman. Performing as vocalist for student jazz bands, electric guitar ensembles and a cappella groups she has a sound that fellow students describe as “womanly.” May 2000 saw the independent release of a debut cd I Feel Good With the Blues. Receiving airplay in the United States, Canada, and Europe the album does not fit into the traditional blues niche. North of the Border reviewer Dave Miller states, "A great choice of tunes, well-produced, and Lorna's superb vocals make this a 'must-have' album." Lorna has performed at many Central Texas venues including the Heart o’ Texas Fair and Rodeo, Brazos River Festival, Temple Jazz Festival, World Aids Day and Hot Summer Nights. In addition to solo gigs she also appears with Elephants’ Gerald, a ten piece ensemble featuring a sound of blues, swing, jazz and classic rock.
