Ryan Bingham After Winning the Oscar

Close your eyes while listening to Ryan Bingham’s latest album, Junky Star, and you might mistake his soulful smoker’s voice for that of a country music vet. Even judging from the crowd that turned up at The Living Room last night to hear him perform, you might've expected to see a weathered old cowboy on stage. But Bingham, a New Mexico native, is only 29 years old. His song “The Weary Kind,” which was co-written by T-Bone Burnett for the movie Crazy Heart, recently won the Oscar for Best Original Song, and while he’s only been on the scene since the debut of his first album, Mescalito , in 2007, the gravel-voiced singer/songwriter has already garnered comparisons to the likes of Steve Earle and Tom Waits, and is set to tour alongside country music legend Willie Nelson this September.
