Lovett CD, gig salute fellow Texas musicians

After a quarter-century of recording and performing, Lyle Lovett is recognized as one of the most talented singer-songwriters to come out of Texas.

The Lone Star State native, who launched his career with a 1986 album recorded in Scottsdale, has drawn on country, gospel, folk, blues and rock in crafting a rootsy sound that accompanies clever, insightful lyrics. 

Lovett, 52, and his Large Band will spotlight his latest CD - "Natural Forces," featuring interpretations of songs by Texas writers he admires - in Phoenix on Wednesday.

Question: You toured Australia for the first time recently, a place where country music is popular.

Answer: They market me (as) a for-real country guy over there, which I am not here. They seemed to be more familiar with my more-country songs, which was interesting to see.

Q: It's a vast continent. A bit like Texas?
