Hippie-trippy Todd Snider — the screamingly funny left-wing songwriter who usually starts off dressed like a hip college teacher and ends up disheveled and barefoot on stage — returns for one of those Sings Like Hell events at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara on Saturday.
The New York Times called him “a scruffy modern troubadour,” pointing out that “in the stripped-down area where country meets folk there hasn’t been a phrasemaker as wryly quotable since when — the heyday of Kris Kristofferson and John Prine?” And Rolling Stone, in a favorable review of his latest album, “The Excitement Plan,” called Snider a “lowlife Randy Newman yet to fully taste the big time. But creatively, he’s already there.”
