Bleu Edmondson

With The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, Bleu Edmondson’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed Lost Boy, the southern-fried country rocker embarked on a search for truth, stripping back layers of regret, loss, and longing to uncover a renewed, albeit somewhat painfully soul-baring, view of himself and the world around him.  He dug deeper into what the music meant to him as a musician, a writer and a man. “Writing is like holding up a mirror to those darkest corners of our lives that we keep hidden,” confides the raspy-throated singer.  “It’s not always a pretty reflection, but it’s real and it matters.”  The collection of songs ministers to the saint and the sinner in each of us. It is an amalgamation of those touch points and influences that give us permission to question, confront and raise a little hell on Saturday night.

For the disc’s debut single, “No Room for Mercy,” the soulful singer/songwriter paints a vivid picture of the painful unraveling of a relationship, with a south Texas thunderstorm as a symbolic backdrop.  The raw wounds of deception, anger and disappointment are ripped wide open as the betrayed singer tells his lover that there is a price for what she has done and “you won’t lie to me anymore.”  Unlike some of his songwriting peers in other genres, Bleu chooses not to resolve the situation – or to explain in detail the circumstances involved – opting instead to allow the listener room to weave their own experiences into the song’s storyline.

Edmondson’s lyrics convey a worldly perspective of one who has lived a life balanced on the edge – of success and failure, love and hate, elation and despair – with his trademark grit and unselfconscious vulnerability intact.   There is no sugar-coating in his songs; he simply calls it like he sees it.

His men are flawed, with the brooding darkness of someone who has loved, lied and lost but for reason untold, repeats his mistakes time and again; and they are also vulnerable, with a desolate loneliness of someone who has been loved, been lied to and been left behind.   Sometimes they are scared little boys, strangers to themselves and mysteries to those around them.  But at the end of the day, they love a good party.

The women in Edmondson’s songs are innocent in one moment, insincere in the next, and unable to love the man who is willing to give them his heart.  They dance, they cry, they lose faith, they scream, and they love and hate interchangeably.  They are omnipresent, sometimes appearing as a barefoot angel sent to save the lost souls living life on the outside, or other times as a past-her-prime party girl who still has the boys fighting for her attention – and anything else she might surrender.

The couples he writes of lose their minds, quench each other’s thirsts, lie and fail to keep their promises; they fear, they take chances and through it all they love, with an urgent intensity that speaks to the desperation in their lives.

Never been a big fan of Bleu E Band, but I gave this live cd a try. You would think that they would have a better sounding cd that this one. It sounds like someone set up a recorder in the back of the venue. Horrible recording! Listen to Cory Morrow, Roger Creager or Houston Marchman's LIVE CD's to get the sound right...

I've really enjoyed the live CD. I know it has been a while coming, but worth the wait. We try to make as many of Bleu's shows as possible because they are always entertaining and when Bleu sings he puts his soul into the song. In this CD that soul comes out at you. Keep up the good work.

I love BEB, but this album sounds like 11 bootlegs put together. After the wait you'd think you'd get to hear a good sounding album. Highly disappointed. Let the slamming begin, go to the bootleg site from last January that we all know about. Tell me this sounds better. It does not.

I saw The Bleu Edmondson Band for the first time at Gruene Hall last Saturday and I have to say I was completely blown away. I've lived in Austin for only a couple of years and love live music. I was really impressed with every aspect of the show, from the lights to the stage show and especially the songs. A couple of years ago I went to see Cross Canadian Ragweed at the superbowl in Houston and I thought they were pretty good, but I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed Bleu's performance a lot better. From the moment they hit the stage with the song ressurection I was completely captured by their performance. I always had a pre-conveived notion about what Texas country was, but if this is Texas country then I don't ever want to listen to anything else. I want to thank them for putting on one of the best shows I've seen in a long time and I'll be sure to see them again whenever they are in town

dear dale-grow up. the days of noodling guitar solos are over in the beb. coby IS great but if you want to hear only him go look up his new project with the mike mancy band. also about the "new guy" he must not be that bad seeing as how he has played with dixie chicks, pat green, and now the beb, maybe they just dont know good guitar players like you do. and finally about the smoke and lites at the greune hall show, thats your loss if you think those things take away from the live show experience. jack ingram, pat green and ragweed can use that stuff at shows but i guess that the beb isnt allowed to have some fun. my husband is the drummer and has been with bleu for 3 years and this cd has been a long time coming for him and the fellow members of the band so if you dont like it, thats your right, but dont call out musicians when you dont know what or how to do what they do. and about the quality of this cd, appearantly you havent listened to any of the other live cd's coming out lately. or maybe your taste is just in your mouth, next to your opinion. i am very proud of these guys and i give this cd 5 stars plus!!! good luck finding a new band that will cater to your musical needs dale. kelly bowen

Wow. I am so dissappointed. I've been looking forward to this for years and this is what we get. Only half of the CD (if that) features Coby Weir on guitar, and the other guy is horrible. Also, for having been recorded over 4 nights you would think they could have found some better cuts. The only reason it gets 3 stars is because all Bleu's best songs are there. His cover of 'I Got Drunk' is horrible, but that song is horrible to begin with. I'm really sad to say that Bleu is going a new direction with his music, and I don't care for it at all. Who plays Gruene Hall and brings along a smoke machine and light show? Poor show, Bleu. As far as I'm concerned this CD marks the end of an era for the Bleu Edmondson Band. It's been fun.
