Bleu Edmondson

With The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, Bleu Edmondson’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed Lost Boy, the southern-fried country rocker embarked on a search for truth, stripping back layers of regret, loss, and longing to uncover a renewed, albeit somewhat painfully soul-baring, view of himself and the world around him.  He dug deeper into what the music meant to him as a musician, a writer and a man. “Writing is like holding up a mirror to those darkest corners of our lives that we keep hidden,” confides the raspy-throated singer.  “It’s not always a pretty reflection, but it’s real and it matters.”  The collection of songs ministers to the saint and the sinner in each of us. It is an amalgamation of those touch points and influences that give us permission to question, confront and raise a little hell on Saturday night.

For the disc’s debut single, “No Room for Mercy,” the soulful singer/songwriter paints a vivid picture of the painful unraveling of a relationship, with a south Texas thunderstorm as a symbolic backdrop.  The raw wounds of deception, anger and disappointment are ripped wide open as the betrayed singer tells his lover that there is a price for what she has done and “you won’t lie to me anymore.”  Unlike some of his songwriting peers in other genres, Bleu chooses not to resolve the situation – or to explain in detail the circumstances involved – opting instead to allow the listener room to weave their own experiences into the song’s storyline.

Edmondson’s lyrics convey a worldly perspective of one who has lived a life balanced on the edge – of success and failure, love and hate, elation and despair – with his trademark grit and unselfconscious vulnerability intact.   There is no sugar-coating in his songs; he simply calls it like he sees it.

His men are flawed, with the brooding darkness of someone who has loved, lied and lost but for reason untold, repeats his mistakes time and again; and they are also vulnerable, with a desolate loneliness of someone who has been loved, been lied to and been left behind.   Sometimes they are scared little boys, strangers to themselves and mysteries to those around them.  But at the end of the day, they love a good party.

The women in Edmondson’s songs are innocent in one moment, insincere in the next, and unable to love the man who is willing to give them his heart.  They dance, they cry, they lose faith, they scream, and they love and hate interchangeably.  They are omnipresent, sometimes appearing as a barefoot angel sent to save the lost souls living life on the outside, or other times as a past-her-prime party girl who still has the boys fighting for her attention – and anything else she might surrender.

The couples he writes of lose their minds, quench each other’s thirsts, lie and fail to keep their promises; they fear, they take chances and through it all they love, with an urgent intensity that speaks to the desperation in their lives.

To James, John, Michael, King (it's obvious you are the SAME apparently religious person... you've even gone so far as "C" just a tad blasphemous don't you think?) Whatever you pan in your "REVIEWS" (more like sour grapes, jealousy, or your frustration as a musician perhaps, or just downright ignorance of music in general drivel)here on LSM.....I WILL buy....Thank You! Can't WAIT for the live record....Bleu live is not to be missed.....keep on keepin on Bleu!!

Man, if you can't feel this music, you've got a problem. Now, I'm not a huge "county" fan, but this the "Band Plays On" album is awesome! It's got a "real" feel to it and it'll do everything from give you a drinking song to something to be happy about. I listen to the CD about daily.

Bleu Edmondson is really talented and Southland, though not the best CD ever, is a solid group of songs. No he doesnt have some amazing voice, who cares. I think he has a ton of potential and eventually could become one of the best acts in TX country. From the sounds of it his live shows are awesome, Im going to have to go see him when hes in town.

Someone asked how or why I compared a Bleu Edmondson Acoustic show to church, and I feel obliged to respond. Have you ever been sitting in church and been moved b/c the message touched you personally? Well just imagine sitting in a small, intimate, setting, with nothing but a couple of dim lights, smokey atmosphere, and a fewof your good friends who are all there for one reason - the music. When you get to the meat of the show - you know the juicy stuff where people are getting up on stage for special appearances, and or accompanyment. Then Bleu starts sharing what different songs mean for him, or where they came from, and he may even do a few random covers... just depends on his mood. But that my friend is church, when the music touches your soul. If you haven't experienced that, then I will buy your ticket to the next Bleu and Stoney acoustic show... and I ask of you to close your eyes, open your heart and be moved along with the rest of us! And that, my friends, is CHURCH!

Bleu and the boys are greatness. They put so much power into their show, it's un-damn-believable. The guys always play like they are playing for 80,000!! Everyone puts so much animation into the show, it makes it even better! I love both album's and can't wait for the next studio album and the live one to come out! Viva la Southland Bandita's!!

This site is meant for real reviews of the artists and their music. If you don't like an artist, for whatever reason, write an honest review of his stuff, and don't buy his cd's or go to his concerts. It doesn't do anyone any good to bash people. These artists and musicians are just trying to make a living like everyone else; although they are in the public eye, they do not deserve to be personally attacked in a public forum, especially by people that don't know them well. I find it hard to believe that even a majority of the people posting these disparaging remarks have ever met Bleu, Coby, Dave, or John Michael in any setting outside of a show. Even then, I would be willing to guess that they have met the guys in passing--hardly the kind of knowledge that entitles them to make comments about the guys' personalities.

I am a fan of Bleu and dig his albums. I am wondering when the guy is going to put out some new music though? He has been playing the same songs for three years and its getting old. I would love to see a new album soon cause I do think he has it in him to make it out of Texas.

I couldn't agree with "C" more on this issue. Reviews are meant to give feedback on music. However, when you purchase a CD you are supporting an artist. At least that's what it is in this whole "Texas Music" genre. It looks like several people have had a bad experience with Bleu and they don't encourage other people to support Bleu Edmondson. That's fine, but please word it in a more productive manner. Support Texas Music means support the artist you like and respect. That's what brings us all together.
