Bleu Edmondson

With The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, Bleu Edmondson’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed Lost Boy, the southern-fried country rocker embarked on a search for truth, stripping back layers of regret, loss, and longing to uncover a renewed, albeit somewhat painfully soul-baring, view of himself and the world around him.  He dug deeper into what the music meant to him as a musician, a writer and a man. “Writing is like holding up a mirror to those darkest corners of our lives that we keep hidden,” confides the raspy-throated singer.  “It’s not always a pretty reflection, but it’s real and it matters.”  The collection of songs ministers to the saint and the sinner in each of us. It is an amalgamation of those touch points and influences that give us permission to question, confront and raise a little hell on Saturday night.

For the disc’s debut single, “No Room for Mercy,” the soulful singer/songwriter paints a vivid picture of the painful unraveling of a relationship, with a south Texas thunderstorm as a symbolic backdrop.  The raw wounds of deception, anger and disappointment are ripped wide open as the betrayed singer tells his lover that there is a price for what she has done and “you won’t lie to me anymore.”  Unlike some of his songwriting peers in other genres, Bleu chooses not to resolve the situation – or to explain in detail the circumstances involved – opting instead to allow the listener room to weave their own experiences into the song’s storyline.

Edmondson’s lyrics convey a worldly perspective of one who has lived a life balanced on the edge – of success and failure, love and hate, elation and despair – with his trademark grit and unselfconscious vulnerability intact.   There is no sugar-coating in his songs; he simply calls it like he sees it.

His men are flawed, with the brooding darkness of someone who has loved, lied and lost but for reason untold, repeats his mistakes time and again; and they are also vulnerable, with a desolate loneliness of someone who has been loved, been lied to and been left behind.   Sometimes they are scared little boys, strangers to themselves and mysteries to those around them.  But at the end of the day, they love a good party.

The women in Edmondson’s songs are innocent in one moment, insincere in the next, and unable to love the man who is willing to give them his heart.  They dance, they cry, they lose faith, they scream, and they love and hate interchangeably.  They are omnipresent, sometimes appearing as a barefoot angel sent to save the lost souls living life on the outside, or other times as a past-her-prime party girl who still has the boys fighting for her attention – and anything else she might surrender.

The couples he writes of lose their minds, quench each other’s thirsts, lie and fail to keep their promises; they fear, they take chances and through it all they love, with an urgent intensity that speaks to the desperation in their lives.

I wasn't real familiar with Bleu and the boys until recently seeing them for the first time. They don't sound like a lot of the bands in the Texas music scene but isn't that what it's all about, not sounding the same and having your own sound. I thought they put on a great show and have a great sound. Keep up the good work Bleu!

im goin to have to agree with witnasty. no talent??? I haven't heard any music by all these people hating on bleu. and about no talent.ha he writes real music.not all that carbon copy non-sense you hear on the radio from tim mcgraw or garth brooks or any of those people who just dish out money to record a song. bleu is one of the hardest working artists there is. walk up to any of the nashville artist and try just sittin down and talkin with them after a show, see if that happens.ha he works extremely hard at what he does, and gives a damn what his fans thanks. he has more talent in his pinky than all of y'all running ur mouth put together.and about texas having low expectations or w/e. how come we always produce the best people in all kinds of music. waylon, willie, joe elly, lefy frizzell, george jones, lloyd maines, dale watson, stevie ray vaughan, buddy holly, roy orbison, and umm...BOB WILLS.i could go on forever. so lets think it through before staying uneducating dumbass remarks.

Ok....obviously Zig Zag dosen't like Bleu's music, and Daunte dosen't either. Good for them. They are expressing their opinions. They have a right to do that. Now you get mine. Zig Zag...you have seen more talent in a 3rd grade talent show???? I am going to guess that you are in 2nd grade then. If you were any older, YOU would be comming out with a new album, and it would be all over CMT, getting the "belt buckle" award, and having a duet with faith Hill. I take it that you don't, and if you do have a band, who is it, and I KNOW you are not a Texas or Red Dirt musician. Low expectations???? Try writing music that means something to you and recording it. Nashville would NEVER let you do that now! Daunte....or what ever the hell your name is....if you want to slit your wrists, I will be more than happy to provide you with an intervention...its called a six-pack and LIVE MUSIC that actually means something....

No talent ass clown. This is a guy that used to make fun of anyone who wasn't in the cool crowd in high school. What a complete narcissist that uses music as a whore. The only thing more appalling than this hack are the people who actually say they like this 'music.' Seriously, only in a Texas music climate where the standards are so low can this mushroom cap be considered even the least bit legitimate. I've seen more accomplished acts in a 3rd grade talent show. This is a joke right?

OK...I saw some bleu trashers on here, and they are all full of (insert you own explitive here.) I have seen Bleu for a number of years now, and although he has gone through a few different members, his music remains the same, and the new band members know that. I thought dicky was awesome to watch, and if you think that was "theatrics," you need to pull your head out. Big and Rich having a "rapping cowboy" and a midget on stage is theatrics. Feeling the music is not, and that is what Dicky did.... To the guiys in the band...I know over the past two years, there have been a new drummer, bassist, and guitarist. Bleu hasn't missed a beat. Keep it up

I have to disagree on the whole "theatrics angle". Bleu is probably my favorite band. The 1st time I seen them was at Snorty Horse up here in Missouri and I had never even heard of them. The energy they bring (especially dicky) is just amazing and it makes for a great show. I've seen them around half a dozen times now and it seems like they get better everytime
