With The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, Bleu Edmondson’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed Lost Boy, the southern-fried country rocker embarked on a search for truth, stripping back layers of regret, loss, and longing to uncover a renewed, albeit somewhat painfully soul-baring, view of himself and the world around him.  He dug deeper into what the music meant to him as a musician, a writer and a man. “Writing is like holding up a mirror to those darkest corners of our lives that we keep hidden,” confides the raspy-throated singer.  “It’s not always a pretty reflection, but it’s real and it matters.”  The collection of songs ministers to the saint and the sinner in each of us. It is an amalgamation of those touch points and influences that give us permission to question, confront and raise a little hell on Saturday night.

For the disc’s debut single, “No Room for Mercy,” the soulful singer/songwriter paints a vivid picture of the painful unraveling of a relationship, with a south Texas thunderstorm as a symbolic backdrop.  The raw wounds of deception, anger and disappointment are ripped wide open as the betrayed singer tells his lover that there is a price for what she has done and “you won’t lie to me anymore.”  Unlike some of his songwriting peers in other genres, Bleu chooses not to resolve the situation – or to explain in detail the circumstances involved – opting instead to allow the listener room to weave their own experiences into the song’s storyline.

Edmondson’s lyrics convey a worldly perspective of one who has lived a life balanced on the edge – of success and failure, love and hate, elation and despair – with his trademark grit and unselfconscious vulnerability intact.   There is no sugar-coating in his songs; he simply calls it like he sees it.

His men are flawed, with the brooding darkness of someone who has loved, lied and lost but for reason untold, repeats his mistakes time and again; and they are also vulnerable, with a desolate loneliness of someone who has been loved, been lied to and been left behind.   Sometimes they are scared little boys, strangers to themselves and mysteries to those around them.  But at the end of the day, they love a good party.

The women in Edmondson’s songs are innocent in one moment, insincere in the next, and unable to love the man who is willing to give them his heart.  They dance, they cry, they lose faith, they scream, and they love and hate interchangeably.  They are omnipresent, sometimes appearing as a barefoot angel sent to save the lost souls living life on the outside, or other times as a past-her-prime party girl who still has the boys fighting for her attention – and anything else she might surrender.

The couples he writes of lose their minds, quench each other’s thirsts, lie and fail to keep their promises; they fear, they take chances and through it all they love, with an urgent intensity that speaks to the desperation in their lives.

I enjoy this cd from start to finish. Songs like "let me fall" and "good thing" relate well to ordinary people and has such strong lyrics, it could almost make you cry. To be honest I don't think this cd is as good as "Southland" but its damn close. Keep 'em comin Bleu.

The new album is AWESOME!!! It's a cd that you can put on and listen to the whole thing straight through. It's very laid back and "bleusy", but rocks at the same time. It's different from the Southland album, but even better!

Bleu and James, Thank you for the explanation. If I am in town next time you play the Dog I will take you up on your Band's offer to be put on 'the list.' By the way I do not have your bands website adress, I use this website as a means to adress all the music I follow. Thank you again.

Norman, The reason I railed on you is because instead of you going to the bands website and contacting us you chose to complain on a public site. The offer still stands if you want to come out to the stillwater show, I'll put you on the list. And its just not that easy to get a rental that will take the whole band from austin to norman along with a huge trailer for all of our equipment. Do you actually think we wanted to cancel that show? We were really excited about playing with REK and coming back to Oklahoma, but something happened out of our control. You were obvioulsy a big enough fan to drive to norman and we appreciate that but the way you handled it is what ticked me off. My email is [email protected] if you want to come out just let me know. I am sorry about anyone who tried to make it to the Norman show only for us to not be there and trust me, to play with REK I would have walked with the trailer on my back. Yes we did try to rent and yes we did try to find friends and yes we called and asked that if we got up there late could we push the show back but that was out of the question. All this fighting and talkin' trash is ridiculous, things happen and I didn't come through like I would have liked. What James said was right though, we are in Stillwater soon and I will be happy to take care of anyone who drove down to see us and was disappointed. That's the truth and I'm asking for anyone to take me up on it. This was the first gig we have ever, and I mean ever, not been able to make it to, and it was with REK of all people. I aplogize and ask that you not hold it against the band. We always do right by the fans first and us and club owners second, always. Bleu Edmondson Bleu Edmondson

James Stewart, I don't know who you are but if you are in the B.E. band I believe it reflects poorly on them. Your basis for calling me childish is irrational. I drove an hour and a half to see B.E. band and REK. I only saw half of what I paid for, this is reason for me to be unhappy. I never posted any comment that was not based on fact, and in no way did I 'bash' your band. Have I ever heard of car trouble you ask. Have you ever heard of car rental? Have you ever heard of improvision? Had you made your offer to get into the next show in a reasonable fashion I would have happily accepted and spread the word of what a good band you are. Instead you were an ass so next time you are at the Wormy Dog there will be about five less people that pay tickets to see you.

Would give 6 stars if I could. Great sound, love what you are doing, keep it up.

Hey Norman, have you ever had car trouble before? How about breaking down in Austin and not being able to get it fixed in time to make it to the red dirt. If all you're bitching about is a stupid ticket I'll put you on the list the next time we play there. Im pretty sure you still got your money's worth at the show and to be so trivial as to insult the band for circumstances out of our control is just petty! I'll tell ya what, if it upset you enough to actually tell the world on a web sire that we suck, email me at [email protected] and let me know what show you plan on being at and I'll make sure you get in. Dont be a friggin child next time. James Stewart
