. . . an evocative blend of soul, blues, rock and pop
It seems to have been written in the proverbial stars that Johnny Cooper would dedicate his life to performing and entertaining crowds. Since birth, Cooper has been immersed in music of all kinds, and encouraged to pursue his dream. He started performing music in February 2004 at the age of 15 and turning 24 in September 2012, he will have chalked up almost 9 years of professional touring.
Johnny Cooper has accomplished more than many musicians twice his age. Having recorded two critically-acclaimed, full-length studio albums (and another in the works) and not one, but two live albums under his belt the total album sales of which have eclipsed 50,000 Johnny Coopers career trajectory cannot be stopped. He recently had two songs included on the soundtrack for the independent movie, Deep in the Heart, which also includes tracks from Charlie Daniels, Larry Gatlin, Wade Bowen, and others.
Gifted with a rich emotive voice that illuminates his lyrics, Cooper says that each album is another chapter of my life, every song is a short snippet of all the things I have encountered over the years, good times... bad times... and everything in between. I believe the music has evolved because I have evolved... the older you get, the less and less you are scared to try new things, branch out and test your limits.
My goal is to make you forget about everything else and just cut loose for a couple of hours. Johnny Cooper

This cd is to draggy, and not jc at all. Last week Bring me down was at number 19 on the texas music chart, and this week it fell to number 20. I don't see any song on the cd being a chart topper.

Its alright, I guess. Not as nearly good as his other stuf, but okay for one CD. I hope he goes back to doing his good stuff for the next one. It was alot better

JCoop pushes the boundaries and at the same time inspires other musical artists to do the same. Way2Go my man, and he does this at such a young age! FOLLOW inspires everyone to pursue their dreams through music and into life. Great refreshing sound.

The guy has a good voice, some good charisma, and musical gifts beyond his years. So I don't know why he'd want to put out an entire CD of fluffy pop music that reminds me way too much of Jamiroquai (remember the '90s one-hit wonders?). I can understand the urge to break away from the usual Red Dirt stuff but this particular direction squanders his talents.

I liked Ignition because it rocked big time but still had alot of country soul in it like JC does. Follow don't have neither and that makes me wonder if JC really cares about red dirt music any more. I bought Follow because Im a big JC fan but I don't think I'll listen to it very much because it don't sound like his other music it sounds like hes trying to be someone diffrent.

Cooper is from my home town so I want to like him but this is awful! The lyrics are inane at best; I know he's young, but did an adult listen to this? Really embarassing to listen to. Try some covers, Johnny, your writing needs work. Ouch!

This CD, Follow, expands the horizons for listeners with its solid lyrics and musical layers. It incorporates rock, rhythm & blues, big band sound, and southern rock. There is something here for all. The music and lyrics for the song "Follow" are at a different level, it is a seemingly metaphysical poem that is remenicent of songs from the Beatles White Album

Follow’ by Johnny Cooper As a music commentator, it’s always a pleasure to help out a promising career with a good word or two in print. But integrity in this music commentary gig requires absolute honesty, and there are times it’s not always a pleasurable thing. This space is about American-style country music in all its many flavors, and I intend to keep it that way. With that said, let’s talk about Johnny Cooper’s new CD, “Follow.” I’ve been looking forward to the release of “Follow” for a long time. But when I got the time to give it a listen, I was disappointed. After listening to the set, I realized that the opener, “Don’t Feel Like That Anymore,” is something of a commentary on Cooper’s career so far. The current single, “Bring Me Down,” may be rooted in Red Dirt, but it hammers home the same sentiment. Most of the songs run to more of a radio-friendly pop-esque feel, with easily forgettable melodies and shallow themes. “Can’t Hold On To You” and “Try” are good examples. And what’s up with the overproduced horn treatment on the “Take Your Number” arrangement? It just doesn’t fit Cooper’s still-developing vocal chops and gives the song a distinct weekday karaoke flavor. Now, I did like “Crazy” quite a bit, and it would make a good radio single. But one strong song out of 10 does not make for a hit album. In the Red Dirt world, Johnny Cooper was a leader — a fresh and interesting young voice that doubtlessly influenced many other aspiring Red Dirt artists, and he seemed destined to become one of the uniquely homegrown sound’s most prominent figures. But with “Follow,” Cooper has chosen a different road — one that has taken him from being a budding leader to being a ... well, just another follower. It’s not good Red Dirt music, it’s not good pop music, it’s not good funk music and it’s definitely not country music of any kind. There’s a saying in Texas music: “Dance with those who brung you.” I could be wrong, of course, but I seriously doubt that the fans who brought Johnny Cooper this far will appreciate being told “I can feel you now, but I can’t hold on to you” (from “Can’t Hold On To You”). I truly hope whoever Cooper is trying to attract with “Follow” embraces his new musical direction. But I can’t help wondering how many old fans he will lose in the process. NEXT rating: C-
