The past two years have been quite a ride for the West Texas-based band Cooder Graw. In that short period of time, the group has grown from playing small 100 seat venues to performing as the headliner in front of thousands at musical events throughout Texas and Oklahoma. They have opened shows for some of Texas' biggest stars (Robert Earl Keen, Jack Ingram, Jerry Jeff Walker, Asleep at the Wheel, among others). Their first CD was recorded live in 1998 was self-produced, and cost less than $1000. Their debut studio CD of 12 original songs, released in November 1999, was produced by Grammy Award winner Ray Benson and 9-time #1 country songwriter Hayden Nicholas. The disc features several special guest performances by major recording artists the group never even dreamed of meeting just months ago. The award-winning group Asleep at the Wheel even joined the band in recording one song on the new offering. 1999 has also brought the band corporate sponsorship, media notice in several newspapers and magazines, and radio airplay on stations throughout Texas. In addition, Cooder Graw has grabbed the attention of several corporate players in the music industry such as Hastings Entertainment, AristoMedia, Bismeaux Productions, and Anderson Merchandisers. The motion picture industry has taken notice of Cooder Graw as well. In April 1999, the band headlined the premiere party for the Universal Pictures release "EdTV" in Austin, Texas. And the band's music will be featured on the soundtrack to the new Trimark Pictures release "Held Up" in theaters later this year. It is very rare for a band to experience the phenomenal increase in popularity that Cooder Graw has the past two years (especially a band coming from the sparsely populated Texas Panhandle). The reason Cooder Graw's star is rising is so quickly is simple. Those who have seen and heard this band will tell you that this band is fun to watch, their music is catchy, their performances rowdy and energetic, and last, but obviously not least, the members are accomplished musicians. Rich Brotherton of Robert Earl Keen's band called Cooder Graw's music "Loud Country." Cooder Graw is now taking their loud country all over Texas, Oklahoma and the Southwest, one town and one dancehall at a time.

Live entertainment does not get better than these boys. They are talented musicians and totally irreverant. If you take your mother to their show she better have a kick ass since of humor or you are in TROUBLE. Matt and the guys have never failed to keep me and the rest of the crowd happy, hopping, and singing along. These guys are the best bang for the buck you will ever enjoy.

Standing Alone
Just bought Wake Up on a whim while at Hastings the other day. Put it in the player while wrapping Christmas gifts and having a beer. Had to stop and re-play several songs. Finally had to delay the gift work and just listen. There are some excellent songs here. I am really interested in Crystal and Ugly Angel. Both songs are different than anything I have heard before. Very interesting musically and lyrically. If you are looking to hear some great sounds I recommend this one. SA

Damn, this is one cool album. Plenty of Loud Country and some new sounds that really rock! Clarksdale and Crystal both are really kick azz songs. The single that is out is cool country dancing song, Lifetime Stand and there are a couple more two steps but man I am diging the new rocking Cooder! I'd recommend it!

Music Lover
Got the new offering from Cooder Graw and can't get over how far these guys have come. Many of these tracks are worthy of concideration for song of the year! "Next to the Truth" may be the song of the Decade. "That Girl Crystal" is interesting from a lyric/hidden meaning standpoint but musically it is incredible!! Very rich and full of those ingredients that average bands can't muster. It gets better everytime it is played. The first release, "Lifetime Stand" is actually an older song the band has finally recorded. It is doing well and for all the right reasons, it's great music. When I think of Texas Music I always think Cooder Graw. Songs for drinking, songs for listening next to a fire, songs for driving, songs for thinking. By the way there is a song on this CD for making love! If you are female you will know it when you hear it. If you are male watchout cause even if you don't get it your lady will! "I'm Afraid of the Dark" is maybe Matt Martindale's best ever. I recommend this album to all and there is even a hidden track at the end, you got to hear this, it is awsome. ML
