The Stephen Pointer Band hails out of Fort Worth Texas, which is known for its rich history and legendary music. Stephen began his musical career at the tender young age of 12 training under Texas Blues legend “Sugar” Dave Millsap. Through his high school years Stephen took advantage of every opportunity he had to play guitar. It wasn’t until he entered college in 1999 at Auburn that he realized he had a knack for performing in front of people. After a year at Auburn he was eager to return home to Texas and attend Texas Christian University where he could further his love of Texas music. It was at TCU where Stephen met fellow band mate Herbie Rolph. The two made an instant connection and formed a band with fellow classmates and local musicians. Playing locally and writing catchy songs the Stephen Pointer Band began to create a buzz in the local music scene. In 2005 the band welcomed guitar phenomena Austin Barker to the mix. A new organic sound was formed and built the foundation for their freshman release “Sixes and Sevens” which was released January 2006 at Billy Bobs Texas. With a growing fan base and a solid live show, the Stephen Pointer Band was quickly turning heads in the entertainment world with multiple nominations in the prestigious Fort Worth Weekly Awards. After a little inspiration from their local Country Station they entered and won the 2007 Texas Music Showdown put on by 95.9 The Ranch in Fort Worth, TX. Their name now in the spotlight they began performing at larger venues and with well-known artists like Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers, and a spot at the Larry Joe Taylor festival which pulled in over 50,000 spectators and had some of the largest Texas/Red Dirt artists like Reckless Kelly and Los Lonely Boys. The final piece of the puzzle was the addition of drummer Joe Carpenter who brought a new level of professionalism to their growing reputation. Things started to naturally fall into place for the band as they began collaborating their ideas. A heavy emphasis was placed on touring and writing new material. Over the course of a year the band further developed their organic sound and have expanded their tour stops from Laredo, TX; Dallas/Fort Worth; up to Stillwater, OK which is known for spawning some of the top Texas/Red Dirt Artists like fellow Smith Music artists No Justice, Stoney LaRue, and Jason Boland & the Stragglers just to name a few. 2008 will see the Stephen Pointer Band at full speed with the release of their new album “State of Mind” due out in August through Smith Entertainment. The new album will showcase strong vocals, pure tone, and maintain that “Outlaw” feel. The title track “State of Mind” shows a true Texas spirit through Stephen’s eyes as he made a trip out to California to play music and found it really doesn’t live up to all that hype. SPB shows their versatility with their crowd favorite “Shut up and Drink” as Stephen and Austin battle on their guitars, which capture the true essence of their live show. No country album would be complete with out a love song, and there is nothing short of that in the song “Last Two Lovers”. With tasteful chord progressions and a tight rhythm section the album “State of Mind” will find its way to the top of Texas Country.
