Bassist Paul Kowert was in his fifth year of classical studies at Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music in 2008 when he received an invitation from million-selling, Grammy-winning artist Chris Thile to join his new progressive bluegrass band Punch Brothers.

"No hesitation at all. It was a dream," says Kowert, who had had an interest in folk music since childhood.. "For awhile I was considering taking orchestral auditions, but I'm really glad I ended up not in an orchestra. There's nothing I'd rather be doing."
