Plough, O’Connor bring Texas to the Albemarle

Saturday night Bobby Plough and his old friend and fellow singer/songwriter Michael O’Connor will take the stage at the Maguire Theater in what you might call a Texas reunion in the Albemarle.

Local folks likely know Plough for his Cypress Creek Grill and his guitar-picking alter ego of the same name. He’s taken the stage in these parts plenty and seems to always come through with his brand of Americana that might be likened to fellow Texans John Prine or Robert Earl Keen, if you’re looking for a comparison.

“It’s a Texas influenced sound,” Plough said in an interview last year. “What both of us do is influenced by the Texas sound.”

Both Plough and O’Connor are singer/songwriters. Both men play their roots music brand to great success. And both men hold promise of a show that will warm your heart on a cold winter night.

Last year Plough reunited with his old Texas friend O’Connor at the Maguire for an evening of original tunes. The folks at Arts of the Albemarle, who run the Maguire, invited Plough and O’Connor and were pleased with the success so they sought these troubadours out for a redux.

Plough got his start in high school, strumming his six-string, but it wasn’t until he was in his 30s, and met Michael O’Connor, that he would be begin to play in Texas bars around his Gulf Coast hometown, Corpus Christi. O’Connor, Plough says, encouraged him to begin playing music, and while he didn’t play with Plough back then, he’s counted as the local troubadour’s influential nudge in the right direction.

But when Plough arrived in North Carolina, he didn’t have a band. That meant if he was going to be serious about performing, he might be going solo, and he figured he would need to begin writing his own material.

Plough began playing at local events such as the Potato Festival and eventually found his audience. From there, he decided it was time to record a CD and “A Barn Full of Memories,” was released.

Since that time he’s been a fixture on the local music circuit, playing not only at the Maguire but area festivals. His show with O’Connor, since it’s in its second run, could be counted as an annual event — this will also be O’Connor’s third performance in the area, having been featured last year with Texas musician Adam Carroll.

O’Connor might be called the quintessential Texas musician. He’s the type of player who can turn a Patsy Cline tune one minute, and switch his gears to bang out a hard driving blues number the next. He is, according to his professional biography, a guitar player, singer, songwriter, bandleader and first-call sideman.

He spends a great deal of time playing with Slaid Cleves, Adam Carroll, Susan Gibson and more.

With Plough, O’Connor will take the Maguire stage to do what Plough says is a Texas “song swap.” While Plough plays a couple of his original tunes, O’Connor will play
