Rat Outta Hell
Album Review
I have been a fan of The Pear Ratz since Hank Moon broke them here in San Antonio on The Outlaw. First time I heard "South of the Nueces" I was hooked by the cool rock beats and the overall raw sound. Recently, though, whenever I went to a Pear Ratz show, Bob Strause, the Ratz lead singer, would say to the audience, "Here's a new one" and it would be a ballad or a waltz or something, and I thought, what the hell is happening to the Ratz? Going soft? Answer: NOPE! This new record, RAT OUTTA HELL is their wildest, and best, mix yet. The six original tunes are as strong as the covers, and it's nice to see the newest Rat, guitarist Joe Talbert, contribute one of those, although I was surprised his was a country tune. Bassist Rodd Dawes's "Light Switch" is a nice ode to the wonders a little darkness can work on your (and your partner's) looks. Bob's "Anything", though, which is the album's final tune, blew me away. Wow! Although it's toned down a bit, this song could very easily be covered by Megadeth -- and I hope that happens! It's also great to see the unofficial fifth Rat, Jarrod Birmingham, again contributing songs and vocals, and another of my favorites, Rich O'Toole providing a co-write on "Cheaters", one of the album's best songs. RAT OUTTA HELL is a bit slicker than the Ratz first two records, but Bob's voice is still as earthy as ever, and that keeps the country tunes from having that godawful mainstream radio sound, making them, instead, very enjoyable even to this non-country listener. Bottom line: RAT OUTTA HELL rocks in all the right spots, rolls in the others, and should be well-received by current fans as well as bring in some new ones. 'Nuff said. Oh, wait … did I mention that the cover is badass! That's gotta win an award somewhere, right? Look and listen … the Ratz are back!

Quit giving bands like this 5 stars!! It cheapens the value of it!
