When Jack Ingram won the 2008 Academy of Country Music award for “Best New Male Vocalist,” thousands of people in the audience had to be smiling to themselves about that whole “new” thing. They knew the thirty-something, steel-eyed veteran accepting that trophy on that stage in Vegas had been rocking roadhouses, theaters and stadiums relentlessly since 1997, that he’d been celebrated by critics and fans of hard-core country music for more than a decade, and that as a Texas-born songwriter and performer, he’d been on the short list of next generation artists who could fill the boots of Lone Star legends like Willie and Waylon and the boys.

But the award did mean that Ingram, after trials and setbacks that would have buckled other artists, had at last matched the commercial success he’d always wanted with the integrity on which he’d always insisted. So he told the crowd with no small measure of pride and triumph that night that “big dreams and high hopes” can come true.

Now, as if to validate and amplify that truth, Ingram remains in the forefront of country music with the album Big Dreams & High Hopes, the seventh studio disc of his career and his third for Nashville maverick indie label Big Machine Records. Its eleven tracks range through the many facets of Ingram’s unique take on country music and songwriting. There’s the textured and contemplative “Seeing Stars” sung in ethereal tandem with Patty Griffin. You’ll find a couple of superb roots rocking country songs Jack wrote with compadre and mentor Radney Foster. And you’ve probably already heard the swimming hole party anthem “Barefoot and Crazy” which quickly became a radio smash and a soundtrack for the hot summer of 2009.

I think in your anger you are loosing sight of the reason for this site, and for the ability to review music here. Its not so you can launch a personal attack on the artist or other reviewers. Hell you don't like Jack's music get on here and say so, but when you try to attack his personality or life that is stupid. Jack Ingram is a happily married man and father. His music has soul beyond many that I have seen. He puts on one of the best live shows I have seen and trust me I've seen A LOT of live music. And if you listen to what he says in between songs he does have respect for the artists that have come before him. So to say that he is making any other former artists roll over in their grave is just moronic.

Last night in Luckenbach rocked! I loved his story about it being so hard to find because people keep stealing the damn signs. Jack is always a pleasure to take in live.

Jack puts on one of the best live shows in the entire state. Me and my freinds drove down to Luckenbach last night and saw him. The show was simply amazing.

If you cant appreciate the soul that Jack puts into his music, you are not a true fan. Jack is the most true, intelligent and soulful singer/songwriter i have ever met. He has such a great look on life, and I wish him the absolute best in everything that he pursues. He puts on a great show, and is always a treat to watch! I really hope that he makes it as far as he wants to go and that the world appreciates his music. If not his #1 Texas fans would gladly have him back all for ourselves. Keep on keepin on Jack.

John, I think its funny you say the new CD sounds nashville, since the CD is exactly the same as the Live @ Gruene Hall with three new tracks. So I think your description might be slightly off, maybe do a little more research before you make judgements.

I've been a fan of Jacks for about 3 or 4 years now. Not a die hard, but not a rookie either. I haven't neccessarily loved every song he's ever recorded, but his shows are always great his writing is very consistent, which is hard to find in any music genre. I just bought the 'live where ever you are' CD and i love it. I know he's put out a few live albums lately, but one was an acoustic album, and the live at billy bobs doesnt come close to this one. I've always thought the billy bobs cds sound a little too polished. so as long as jack gets another studio record out pretty soon, he's gonna be just fine. cant wait for the next show

Jack has been at this thing for 10+ yrs now. Give the guy a break. Give the music a chance... I actually like most of the new stuff. Be a good fan, and cheer him on as he is broadening his career. Be glad that he is FINALLY getting what he deserves. The world is getting to share Jack Ingram now...
