Album Review
I really used to love Pat Green's music. It had heart, good lyrics, and most importantly that strong Texas flavor that made it so great. Until I bought and listened to this album, I figured that Pat would never go nashville. I thought that "Carry On" had a hint of nashville flavor to it, but I figured that Pat would have noticed his error and gotten back to the Texas music that gave him his fame. Not so. This album, without a doubt is the worst waste of fifteen dollars I have ever made. Aside from the couple of old songs thrown on to this album to help disguise the trash, there is nothing on it worth listening to. It makes me want to cry, watching Pat's music slip into the depths of typical Nashville crap. Please come home Pat, we miss you.

Tense Present
This CD is made up of 14 songs, most written by Jeff DeVillez. This singer/songwriter is backed up by solid players who can play a variety of subtle styles. The album opens with "Love Is The Power",which is a pretty tune, light pop of sorts.Next comes "Hoosier Boy In Texas",a pretty country/folk Number.May be autobiographical.A nice dobro and harmonica as well as violin add much support. The main players throughout the CD are Marvin Dykhuis(guitars),Paul Pearcy(drums/percussion),David Heath(Fender electric bass),and Floyd Domino(keyboards)."Simple Life"is a song that is autobiographical. The beat is latin, with a keen tropical sense. The trumpet enriches the performance.A trombone and sax, along with a violin, are part of the next cut"Piece of A Dream. The lyrics are almost like poetry. JDs singing is sound, smooth and generally solid. This ballad has much to offer."(This Morning)How Love Can Be"is the fifth track, and it is one of the best as it flows and displays sophistication and a good arrangement. The sax and trombone solos and the beautiful Spanish guitar part give the selection depth and body.Again an exotic sense pervades this classy creation. One of my favorites here. The song "Love Is Real"seems like a song that could have been written by SADE.The tune exudes class and that aura found in many of that artist's great hits. Another fine work.Another fine work,"Ordinary Man",features a cool organ.A song that shows me a lot of talent from JD and band. Next we get a Buddy Johnson composition"Since I Fell For You". Many have covered it before and you will remember this great number.DeVillez's rendition is excellent in my mind. The song just comes together with great playing from piano and a neat trombone which infuses an emotive melancholy sense. It may be the best thing on the album.Great vocal delivery."In Your Eyes"is a change of pace with nice layerings of instruments.Musically,it sounds like a hit.The intonations, backgrounds, and overall performance make this song have a big feel to it.Guest saxophonist ELIAS HASLANGER plays a fine tenor. An enjoyable creation that has a hot lead guitar as it winds down. Then comes"Living Without You"which is a softer effort. It doesnt come across as well as the other songs, and may be the weakest song on the album,in my opinion.Cut #11 is "El Poder Del Amor"(The Power of Love). It is a very simple, yet pretty work sung in Spanish.A slow, nuanced selection,Next is only the second song on the CD that wasn't written by JD"Quiero Dormir Cansado"(M.Alejandro-A.Magdalena), roughly..."I Want To Sleep Tired" is a sad yet beautiful romantic song in Spanish. The emotion is clear and the overall effort is lovely. This makes me mention the production values. The music is well-mixed,balanced,and production tight and clean. No fancy tricks or frills, just a solid, workmanlike display.A song,"Movin' Through The Night"has a slight reggae or calypso feel.Clearly exotic, tropical the cut has nice forward movement, good rhythm and appeal. The album closes with "Tropic Mountain Evening".I don't know why,but that song made me think of Jimmy Buffett.Well, that island sense and instrumentation is reminiscent.A relaxing song,an appropriate track for ending. This is a very strong creation from an artist I had never heard of before. The album liner notes in the libretto show attention to detail, and the many pages include all the lyrics and credits for each song.An impressive project!Check him out. I look forward with anticipation to his next album. Armando Canales for Amazon.com

Truckstop Diaries
Remember the first time you listened to your first Robert Earl song? Or maybe it was Pat Green? Or maybe it was Townes or Guy Clark or Jerry Jeff? Anyway, whoever that first artist was that turned you on to OKOM (Our Kind of Music), I promise you that Jason Boland will do the same for you a hundred fold. In fact, if I was a millionare I would buy a thousand or so of this CD and send it to anyone/everyone that was willing to just listen to it, because that is how impressed I am, and then I would have a thousand more friends all willing to buy me a beer. If there were such a thing as a StragglerHead (and there By Gawd should be), I would qualify. I absolutely LOVE these guys!!!! Seriously, if you are thinking about buying a CD from this site make it Pearl Snaps or Truckstop Diaries.

i have no love for a sellout. if you dump your fans and run to nashville you're a dickhead. charlie robison qualifies for that title. nothing wrong with fame -- but definitely something wrong with selling out. charlie is a jackass

Three Days
Album Review
Before even beginning to say anything about Pat's new record or him "selling out" to Nashville, I think it is very important to first state his goals as a TX singer/songwriter. It has always seemed to me that his main goal was to take TX Music to the masses. From the days spent in tiny bars in front of 20 people to 40,000 in Bedford, the guy has always wanted to take TX music to the masses. Some people like that, some people don't. No matter what, no one has the right to condemn Pat Green. If not for him, numerous TX singer/songwriters that we all know and love would never have been as well-known in the Lone Star State as they are now. Many thanks to Pat for that. Now, on to the album (bear with me): It's not his best, but it's certainly not bad. A little polished, yes, but there's nothing wrong with that. Reasonable song selection -- it was nice to see some old favorites as well as new ones -- however, I wanted to see more new Pat-penned tunes. Two just isn't enough. Overall, the album gets 4 stars. It's no "Carry On," but it's just the right thing to get TX music a good and respectable name. So don't diss Pat for "selling out" and don't whine and moan because your "secret" is out. Congratulations to Pat for the fame and recognition that he has worked so hard to earn and I will always respect the man for what he's done for the sound of the Lone Star State Keep on keepin' on--
